Meditation is a chance to tune inward and connect with the true self – not the ego, fear or thoughts. Meditation is about grounding inward, being presently present and feeling at ease in the body, mind and spirit. In meditation, an attempt is made to activate the parasympathetic system and slowly balance between parasympathetic and sympathetic systems by inducing complete physical, emotional and mental relaxation!

There is a meditation practice that is great for all people – young, old, flexible, inflexible. This practice is coined as The Art of Conscious Relaxation or Yoga Nidra. In this meditation, we practice laying in savasana (laying on our backs) and we train the mind consciously, step by step.

Yogic sleep is the state in which conscious mind subsides but awareness remains. The yogis call it psychic sleeping. Where inspirations of the inner self can be received by our mind without obstruction and fluctuation. It’s an awakened sleep where the body and external thought processing mind are put to sleep. Meditation establishes a link between the conscious desires, the will power, and the subconscious and unconscious mind. When this happens, one cultivates powerful benefits and feels in total control of all aspects of their life.

Yoga is universally recognized as one of the oldest and most important scientific spiritual legacies of humanity and has been preached, written about as well as practiced uninterruptedly since the dawn of human history.

In the ancient yogic text, Yoga Taravali, Acarya Sankara described the yogic sleep method as: “When mind has transcended maya (delusion) when ego has become static, when senses are no longer functioning and when communications between the mind and senses have been cut, when I and you no longer exist for a period of time, Yoga Nidra starts”. I give a huge heartfelt thanks to my teacher, Yogi Charu, for bringing this practice into my life.
